Clearing out a Helensvale home, old or new

Helensvale was one of the earliest planned suburbs at the edge of the Gold Coast hinterland, and its first residents moved in during the 1980s. The Pacific Motorway runs down its western side, the Coomera River forms the northern boundary and Coombabah Lake lies to the south-east. Trains, trams and buses all link up at Helensvale station. Because homes here were built anywhere between the 1980s and quite recently, no two clean-ups look the same. Here's how to handle the common ones.

When a 1980s house needs a refresh

Many of the original Helensvale homes are now at the point where the kitchen, bathroom and flooring are ready to go. Strip-out waste like that is General Builders material. For one or two rooms, a 4m³ or 6m³ skip is about right. A 4m³ holds roughly 16 wheelie bins of rubbish, and a 6m³ around 24. One caution for homes built before 1990: get any suspect wall or roof sheeting tested before you take it off. Asbestos can't go in any of our bins.

Canal homes around Monterey Keys

Up the northern end, canal estates like Monterey Keys give boats a way out to the Coomera River and Saltwater Creek. The water normally sits behind the house, so the front driveway is where the work happens and where the skip will land. Move cars and clutter off it before the truck turns up. Doing the waterfront garden as well? Keep the clippings apart from everything else and they can go in a dedicated Green Waste bin.

Townhouses and body corporate rules

Helensvale has its share of townhouse complexes, with older ones along Helensvale Road and more recent ones on Careel Close. In most of them, the driveways and visitor parks are shared common property. That gives the body corporate a say in where a skip can sit. Have a chat with them first, then book. If the spot they offer is small, the 3m³ skip takes up the least room and still holds about 12 wheelie bins' worth.

Driveway or street?

A skip on your own side of the boundary needs no permit at all. Once it has to be placed on public land, such as the road, footpath or nature strip, the City of Gold Coast's permit rules kick in. You arrange the permit yourself and you're responsible for it. EZI Skips doesn't apply for permits on anyone's behalf, so if street placement is on the cards, get it organised before your delivery date.

Helensvale questions

Common questions

If I book today, when could a skip reach Helensvale?

Our earliest delivery is 36 hours after booking, and orders placed before midday can be delivered the next day. Pick your date online and let us know whether morning or afternoon suits better. That's a preference we work towards, not a set time, so keep the drop spot clear for the whole half-day.

Is a permit needed if the skip sits on my Helensvale driveway?

No. A bin inside your property boundary doesn't need one. A City of Gold Coast permit only comes into play once the skip is off your property and out on the road, footpath or nature strip. In that case you organise the permit and it's your responsibility, as we don't arrange them.

Which bin suits a Helensvale bathroom or kitchen job?

One bathroom in an older Helensvale home usually fits in a 3m³ or 4m³ skip. Pulling out a kitchen plus the flooring is more of a 6m³ job. Emptying a whole house before you sell or move? Look at a 9m³. Canal-front gardens can fill a Green Waste bin too, provided nothing but green material goes in.

My Helensvale house is pre-1990. Can old sheeting go in the skip?

Not unless it's been tested and found to be asbestos-free. The Queensland Government's advice says a pre-1990 home probably has some asbestos somewhere, and it isn't something you can identify just by looking. None of our bins can take asbestos, tyres or batteries, so get suspect sheeting checked before it comes off.
